-Conscious sedation- when we get our wisdom teeth pulled out
-Procedural sedation- One is awake but not completely aware of what’s going on. Can be done through ketamine or nitrous oxide. If we have high intakes of these drugs then it can induce sleep and paralysis of the cardiovascular system. But in lower amounts they just relax the patient and reduce anxiety.
-Local anesthesia- remain awake but it not in a dreamy state. Can happen at the dentist also for numbing of teeth. It used to make a small area of the body insensitive to pain. They can come in a topical form. Meaning gels, creams, and sprays can provide the skin with a sense of numbness. Debridement can be injected before giving stitches. IT can last for a few hours.
-Regional anesthesia- More directed for a larger area of the body. It’s directed towards a cluster of nerves. There are two types peripheral regional anesthesia, which can numb out a whole leg and central anesthesia, an epidural for a pregnant women. Central anesthesia usually involves an injection into the cerebrospinal fluid.
-General anesthesia- Total unconsciousness
Steps:
1. Induction- medicine is taken
2. Excitement
3. Anesthetized-muscle relaxation
